Young progressive activists in Europe. Scales, identity and agency
Abstract
In this chapter, I argue that the most relevant factor to explain the contrasting stances towards Europe is that of transna- tional cultures of activism. Each one corresponds to a vision of the world and a coherent set of concepts of social agency that shape the movement's organiza- tion and practices. Interviews and focus groups suggest four cultures of activism are particu- larly popular among progressive youth: self-organized direct democracy outside formal institutions; ecological and social transition practices in daily life; expert activism and protest.
