"CENTRO DEMOCRÁTICO" PARTY IN COLOMBIA: REASONS FOR ITS EMERGENCE AND SUCCESS ; EL PARTIDO "CENTRO DEMOCRÁTICO" EN COLOMBIA: RAZONES DE SU SURGIMIENTO Y ÉXITO

Abstract

This article documents some characteristic features of the Democratic Center (Centro Democrático or CD, in Spanish) party, a new political party that came into existence in Colombia as of 2013 under the leadership of ex-president Álvaro Uribe Vélez. Based on official texts from the CD, surveys conducted by LAPOP, and articles from magazines and newspapers, this article describes and seeks to analyze the process by which the party was formed, its principal organizational features, the ideological orientation of its supporters, its performance in the 2014 legislative and presidential elections and, looking towards the future, its main strengths and weaknesses. ; Este artículo documenta algunos rasgos característicos del Centro Democrático (CD), nuevo partido político que ha aparecido en Colombia desde el 2013 bajo el liderazgo del expresidente Álvaro Uribe Vélez. Con base en textos oficiales del CD, de encuestas realizadas por LAPOP, y de artículos de revistas y de prensa, se describe, y se intenta explicar, el proceso de formación del partido, sus principales rasgos organizacionales, las orientaciones ideológicas de sus simpatizantes, su desempeño en las elecciones legislativas y presidenciales de 2014, y mirando hacia el futuro, sus principales fortaleza y debilidades.
