Abstract

Las mismas viejas fórmulas redentoras embalsamadas con encendida defensa de la democracia es la cara que nos muestra ahora el caudillismo. Sus líderes conservan el discurso antiimperialista, anti-oligarca, estatista, tercermundista de los siglos XIX y XX, y una novedad impensable en el populismo tradicional: llegan a declararse comunistas, seguidores del marxismo-leninismo y del modelo cubano. Promueven elecciones, hacen constituciones y mantienen la apariencia de la separación de poderes. Lo que algunos analistas llamaron –superficial y apresuradamente– "la hora de la izquierda" nunca fue tal cosa, el modelo se ha estancado pero las condiciones que facilitaron el ascenso del autoritarismo están aún presente en algunos países de Latinoamérica.AbstractLatin American dictatorships Caudillism offers us the same old formulas for redemption, but now wrapped up in a rhetorical defense of democracy. Its leaders conserve the anti-imperialist, anti-oligarchic, Statist and Third World discourse inherited from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, while including a novel element (unthinkable for traditional populism): they o as far as to declare themselves communists, devotees of Marxist-Leninism and the Cuban model. They encourage elections, introduce new constitutions and conserve the appearance of a separation of powers. What some analysts -superficially- have called "the Left's hour" was never that. The model has become deadlocked but the conditions favoring the rise of authoritarianism are still present in several Latin American countries.
