José Victorino Lastarria : astronomía científica, literaria y social

Abstract

El artículo analiza un texto interdisciplinario del chileno José Victorino Lastarria, titulado Astronomía celeste i social, publicado en la prensa el año 1867. El estudio se centra, en términos generales, en cómo conviven distintos ámbitos del saber en la obra de este intelectual, tales como: la astronomía, la política, la filosofía y la literatura. Nuestro examen considera la naturaleza híbrida del escrito en cuestión: como una obra literaria, un texto de divulgación científica y un artículo de crítica política y social. En términos específicos, el trabajo está enfocado hacia el tratamiento que en esta fuente se da a la astronomía, a la estrecha vinculación de aquella con la descripción de una realidad social. Ambas perspectivas, la general y la específica, conducen hacia una interpretación acerca de cómo se pensaba, escribía y transmitía la ciencia astronómica en Chile a mediados del siglo XIX. ; We analyse an interdisciplinary article by the Chilean José Victorino Lastarria entitled Celestial and Social Astronomy, which was published in1867. In general, we examine how different fields of knowledge coexisted in the work of this intellectual, including: astronomy, politics, philosophy and literature. Our analysis considers the hybrid nature of the text, as a literary work, a text that aimed at popularizing scientific findings, while, at the same time, it contains political and social criticism. We focus, specifically, on the treatment of astronomy and its close link with a description of a society. Both the general and specific perspectives lead towards an interpretation of how astronomic science was thought, written and disseminated in Chile in the mid-19th century.
