Theatre and translation at the gates of Romanticism: the presence of the Voltaire's tragedies during the Liberal Triennium ; Teatro y traducción a las puertas del Romanticismo: presencia de las tragedias de Voltaire durante el Trienio Constitucional

Abstract

This article studies various translations of Voltaire, all of them produced in the context of the Constitutional government (1820-1823) established by the Spanish liberal revolution of 1820. In this period, changes in the literary scene were caused by the abolition of the strict censorship that Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, had previously installed, and also by a number of significant political and military events. Particular attention is paid to the tragedy La mort de César (1823), a translation by Francisco Altés, and to the changes that it experienced -as a consequence of the political situation- when it was staged in Barcelona. ; Este artículo estudia varias traducciones de Voltaire, todas ellas llevadas a cabo durante el gobierno constitucional (1820-1823) establecido por la revolución liberal española de 1820. En este periodo, los cambios en la escena literaria están provocados por la abolición de la estricta censura que Fernando VII, rey de España, había previamente establecido, y también por un número de significantes acontecimientos políticos y militares. Se presta particular atención a la tragedia La mort de César (1823), traducida por Francisco Altés, y a los cambios que experimentó -como consecuencia de la situación política- cuando se representó en Barcelona.
