"This book examines the mediated shift in the contemporary human condition, focusing on the ways in which we synthesise with media content in daily life, essentially transmediating ourselves into new forms and (re)creating ourselves across media. Across an international roster of essays, this book establishes a transdisciplinary theory for the 'transmedia self', exploring how technological ubiquity and digital self-determination combine with themes and disciplines such as celebrity culture, fandom, play, politics, and ultimately broader self-conception and projection to inform the creation of transmedia identities in the 21st century. Specifically, the book repositions transmediality as key to understanding the formation of identity in a post-digital media culture and transmedia age, where our lives are interlaced, intermingled, and narrativised across a range of media platforms and interfaces. This book is ideal for scholars and students interested in transmedia storytelling, cultural studies, media studies, sociology, philosophy, and politics"--

"The present chapter analyses Samuel Pufendorf's understanding of the international legal order and how it was shaped by his reflections on topics that are conventionally distinguished from international law in academic study, namely religious toleration and theology. The first and second sections examine the post-Westphalian system in the Holy Roman Empire and the importance of keeping the promises made between states. The third section takes up the theological dimension of Pufendorf's thinking in Jus feciale divinum (1695) and the covenant or federal theology it involves. Parallels are consequently drawn between Pufendorf's arguments on covenants with treaties in international law. The concluding section studies these aspects in further detail and shows the extent to which Pufendorf's conception of international law reflects the pattern of his theology"--
"This book employs multiple case studies to explore how the Chinese communist revolution began as an ideology-oriented intellectual movement aimed at improving society before China's transformation into a state that suppresses dissenting voices by outsourcing its power of coercion and incarceration. Illustrating the continuity of the Chinese revolution and past decades' socialist practices and mechanisms, this study is an ideal resource for scholars of Chinese history, politics, and twentieth-century revolutions"--
"This book explores whether the legal and political institutions of Afghanistan have been able to incorporate diverse ethnic groups into the political process. Ethnic accommodation has gained central stage in literature on institutional design and democratic consolidation. However, some divided societies are more explored than others and Afghanistan is one that is critically important for our theories of institutional design in a democratizing, plural society. The work examines the constitution and those provisions of electoral laws and political party laws that together have devised Afghan political institutions including those of the presidential system, unitary government, electoral systems as well as the party system. It argues that due to their incongruence in design and effects, the Afghan political institutions have failed to fully accommodate ethnic groups in the political process. It adopts a holistic approach, while also paying careful attention to the details of each of the individual pieces. Taken together, this approach yields insights about the boundaries and interactions of institutional design. The book will be essential reading for academics, researchers and policy makers interested in constitutional law and politics"--

"This accessible textbook introduces concepts and frameworks from linguistics and uses them in the analysis of language on social media. Assuming no prior knowledge of linguistics and with examples drawn from 12 different social media platforms, including TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat, The Linguistics of Social Media: An Introduction provides the tools to unpick how language is used to portray a particular identity, to persuade, to inform, to amuse and entertain, to vent and to complain. Analysing the language of social media highlights the strategies which operate in the messages and posts found on such platforms. Together, these strategies involve a wide variety of language registers, creativity and language play and a wealth of linguistic innovation. By evidencing the many nuanced ways in which people are engaging with social media, this book demonstrates how users of social media are linguistically savvy, strategic and skilled in navigating different genres and registers online. The book is divided into ten chapters, each comprising two parts: Part 1 introduces key linguistic theory and Part 2 consists of case studies with examples from different social media platforms to demonstrate a particular discourse purpose. Each chapter ends with a summary, references, suggested further readings and ideas for activities and discussions. There are additional chapter quizzes and a glossary in the enhanced eBook. This is the essential textbook for all courses on language and social media, linguistics and language and communication courses"--

Drawing on new data from 100 recent elections, post-election surveys, and original experimental evidence, Alessandro Nai and Jürgen Maier provide the first large-scale comparative investigation into the "darker" sides of human personality in politicians. They show that dark traits are acutely present in populists, go hand in hand with more aggressive forms of campaign rhetoric, and are particularly appreciated by voters with dark personality traits. Dark traits can sometimes be electorally successful, and tend to be associated with a better economic performance. However, dark leaders can lead to increased cynicism in the public, democratic deconsolidation, and even a poorer response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, Dark Politics provides a new way to understand contemporary politics by looking at the crucial role of dark personality traits in leaders and voters
