Biodiversity data is characterized by its cross-disciplinary character, the extremely broad range of data types and structures, and the plethora of different data sources providing resources for the same piece of information in a heterogeneous way. Since the web inception two decades ago, there are multiple initiatives to connect, aggregate, share, and publish biodiversity data, and to establish data and work flows in order to analyze them. The European program LifeWatch aims at establishing a distributed network of nodes implementing virtual research environment in Europe to facilitate the work of biodiversity researchers and managers. LifeWatchGreece is one of these nodes where a portal was developed offering access to a suite of virtual laboratories and e-services. Despite its strict definition in information technology, in practice "portal" is a fairly broad term that embraces many web architectures. In the biodiversity domain, the term "portal" is usually used to indicate either a web site that provides access to a single or an aggregation of data repositories (like: http://indiabiodiversity.org/, http://www.mountainbiodiversity.org/, http://data.freshwaterbiodiversity.eu), a web site that gathers information about various online biodiversity tools (like http://test-eubon.ebd.csic.es/, http://marine.lifewatch.eu/) or a web site that just gathers information and news about the biodiversity domain (like http://chm.moew.government.bg). LifeWatchGreece's portal takes the concept of a portal a step further. In strict IT terms, LifeWatchGreece's portal is partly a portal, partly a platform and partly an aggregator. It includes a number of biodiversity-related web tools integrated into a centrally-controlled software ecosystem. This ecosystem includes subsystems for access control, traffic monitoring, user notifications and web tool management. This deliverable presents a method to provide the researchers with a consistent software environment across multiple computing facilities. The consistency is achieved by constructing a set of build scripts that will install the software tools with the same configurations and versions with the same set of dependencies. EasyBuild was selected as the framework to install and configure the software from source code, optimised for the underlying system and expose them as software-modules with uniform naming across systems. Virtual and remote laboratories (VRLs) are e-learning resources that enhance the accessibility of experimental setups providing a distance teaching framework which meets the student's hands-on learning needs. In addition, online collaborative communication represents a practical and a constructivist method to transmit the knowledge and experience from the teacher to students, overcoming physical distance and isolation. This paper describes the extension of two open source tools: (1) the learning management system Moodle, and (2) the tool to create VRLs Easy Java Simulations (EJS). Our extension provides: (1) synchronous collaborative support to any VRL developed with EJS (i.e., any existing VRL written in EJS can be automatically converted into a collaborative lab with no cost), and (2) support to deploy synchronous collaborative VRLs into Moodle. Using our approach students and/or teachers can invite other users enrolled in a Moodle course to a real-time collaborative experimental session, sharing and/or supervising experiences at the same time they practice and explore experiments using VRLs. ; This work was supported by the Spanish Government under the CICYT Project DPI2007-61068 and the GITE grant of the Technology and Educational Innovation Vice-President Office of the University of Alicante.

[EN] In this paper, virtual and remote laboratories for signal processing are presented. Computational tools that can be used in virtual laboratories or in a remote way via an internet connexion have been developed. These tools are proposed to be used in several subjects at university level of education, in the degrees of Physical Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Informatics. Some of the experiences can be carried out with real system by using a DSP. Students can visually test the results or even by hearing the audio signals. These tools can motivate the student in their study and help them in their learning. Some results of the effect of the application of these virtual and remote labs at the University Complutense of Madrid are discussed. ; [ES] En este trabajo se exponen diversas contribuciones que se han ido desarrollando en el contexto de la enseñanza universitaria para carreras científicas que facilitan la comprensión de los principales conceptos del procesamiento digital de señales y reconocimiento de patrones. The study aimed to identify the extent of biology teachers' awareness regarding the importance of virtual laboratories in teaching biology for secondary school. It also intended to develop a proposal to enable biology teachers to use virtual laboratories in teaching secondary level. To achieve these aims, the descriptive-analytical approach was used. The research sample consisted of fifty female biology teachers at the secondary level in the city of Al-Kharj. The study applied the questionnaire as its main tool to gather data. The study concluded that the degree of awareness among female biology teachers regarding the importance of virtual laboratories in teaching biology for the secondary level was found at a moderate level. Besides, the ability of female biology teachers to use virtual laboratories in teaching biology for the secondary stage was low. Considering these results, a proposal was developed to enable female biology teachers to use virtual laboratories in teaching biology for secondary school.

Interpersonal communication is crucial in education for developing lifelong problem-solving skills. Despite its decline during the pandemic, research in virtual educational environments, such as Virtual Laboratories, remains limited. On the other hand, the pandemic has stimulated exploration and development of these tools. The objective of this article is to identify problematic situations in Virtual Laboratories to enhance interpersonal communication. Employing a Systematic Literature Review method encompassing articles published between 2019 and 2022, our study yields the following key findings: a) Interpersonal communication remains undercovered in main focus; b) Technical and natural disciplines dominate in Virtual Laboratories; c) The research on interpersonal communication is insufficiently addressed in main objectives and results; d) Interpersonal communication is valued for various pedagogical reasons, with its relevance in collaborative learning standing out; e) The concept of Virtual Laboratory adopted by researchers may guide the way the importance of interpersonal communication is seen. This research will benefit the innovation process in the context of Virtual Laboratories in need to develop the competencies of global importance.

It is pointed out that while states are based on national identity, big cities are heterogenous in their ethnic & social composition, which is exactly what gives them the advantage over states in today's cosmopolitan & global world. The intellectual strength & innovative creativity are the foundations from which the economic & cultural strengths of big cities arise. Cities are the laboratories at which the future organizational forms of human civilization are being developed & tested. Historically, the city precedes the nation-state, however, this antiquity does not prevent the city to represent today a more modern formation of social life than the traditional state. Authoritarian state governments mistrust big cities because they are complex & difficult to control, & also because megacities are interested in being cosmopolitan more than peddle chauvinism. The principal difference between a state & a city is that the latter is built on commerce & organization & thus can better meet the economic needs of its residents & respond more quickly to their everyday needs. In many states, there is a certain degree of alienation separating big cities from the rest of the country, often manifested in outlook, attitudes, morals, or ideology differences. Z. Dubiel
