Many people predict a massive use of augmented reality head-mounted displays in different areas already explored by research, including health, education, entertainment and industry. Each of these areas involves scenarios with significant and ubiquitous text input activity, whether for a username or password, annotation of documents or virtual objects, a comment, a report or for sending messages. However, the contexts of use and the characteristics of these augmented reality head-mounted displays imply new interfaces beyond the usual framework of the keyboard-mouse couple or the tactile surface already adopted by the personal computer and the smartphone. In that regard, several text entry interfaces for head-mounted displays have been suggested, implemented and studied, through the recognition of gestures such as those of the hands, head or gaze, up to specific peripherals, such as controllers, gloves or rings, but none adequately responds to the constraints imposed by augmented reality for industrial and office work environments. Within the limits of these contexts supported by our industrial partner, this thesis attempts to address this problem by offering two new complementary text entry interfaces dedicated to augmented reality head-mounted displays. The first solution dedicated to the industrial environment invites users to combine a smartwatch with the head-mounted display to offer a multimodal interface adapted to difficult situations. The second solution dedicated to the office environment, invites users to handle a cubic device offering similar characteristics than traditional keyboards while being mobile. We adopted iterative user-centered design methods to implement parts of our solutions, and followed an empirical research approach including eight experiments to study and compare them. The state of subglacial pore water, whether liquid or frozen, is associated with differences in electrical resistivity that span several orders of magnitude; hence, liquid water can be inferred from electrical resistivity depth profiles. Such profiles can be obtained from inversions of transient (time-domain) electromagnetic (TEM) soundings, but these are often non-unique. Here, we adapt an existing Bayesian transdimensional algorithm (Multimodal Layered Transdimensional Inversion – MuLTI) to the inversion of TEM data using independent depth constraints to provide statistical properties and uncertainty analysis of the resistivity profile with depth. The method was applied to ground-based TEM data acquired on the terminus of the Norwegian glacier, Midtdalsbreen, with depth constraints provided by co-located ground-penetrating radar data. Our inversion shows that the glacier bed is directly underlain by material of resistivity 102 Ωm ± 1000 %, with thickness 5–40 m, in turn underlain by a highly conductive basement (100 Ωm ± 15 %). High-resistivity material, 5×104 Ωm ± 25 %, exists at the front of the glacier. All uncertainties are defined by the interquartile range of the posterior resistivity distribution. Combining these resistivity profiles with those from co-located seismic shear-wave velocity inversions to further reduce ambiguity in the hydrogeological interpretation of the subsurface, we propose a new 3-D interpretation in which the Midtdalsbreen subglacial material is partitioned into partially frozen sediment, frozen sediment/permafrost and weathered/fractured bedrock with saline water. ; Publisher PDF ; Peer reviewed

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery is standard of care in surgical treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and is not without risks of adverse effects, including disruption of the fundoplication and postfundoplication dysphagia, in some cases leading to reoperation. Non-surgical factors such as pre-existing anxiety or depression influence postoperative satisfaction and symptom relief. Previous studies have focused on a short-term follow-up or only certain aspects of disease, such as reoperation or postoperative quality of life. The aim of this study is to evaluate long-term patient-satisfaction and durability of laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery in a large Danish cohort using a comprehensive multimodal follow-up, and to develop a clinically applicable scoring system usable in selecting patients for anti-reflux surgery. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The study is a retrospective cohort study utilising data from patient records and follow-up with patient-reported quality of life as well as registry-based data. The study population consists of all adult patients having undergone laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery at The Department of Surgery, Kolding Hospital, a part of Lillebaelt Hospital Denmark in an 11-year period. From electronic records; patient characteristics, preoperative endoscopic findings, reflux disease characteristics and details on type of surgery, will be identified. Disease-specific quality of life and dysphagia will be collected from a patient-reported follow-up. From Danish national registries, data on comorbidity, reoperative surgery, use of pharmacological anti-reflux treatment, mortality and socioeconomic factors will be included. Primary outcome of this study is treatment success at follow-up. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Study approval has been obtained from The Danish Patient Safety Agency, The Danish Health Data Authority and Statistics Denmark, complying to Danish and EU legislation. Inclusion in the study will require informed consent from participating subjects. The results of the study will be published in peer-reviewed medical journals regardless of whether these are positive, negative or inconclusive. This is a collaborative ethnographic research project that highlights the artistic, literary contributions of racially diverse young men. It uses Critical Race Theory to question conventional, Eurocentric educational approaches that historically and currently continue to suppress various socially and culturally learned modes of communication. This article presents two research projects in urban and suburban formal and informal educational institutions to highlight multimodal literary approaches. The first project is an amalgamation of two critical, ethnographic case studies that explores how racially diverse young men express their literacy through rap and spoken word poetry. The second project uses ethnographic methods to observe racially diverse young men's production of films and photographs in high school, community centers, and art gallery spaces. This study uses visual methods coupled with affect and sensory-laden approaches to collect data and conduct an analysis. The article reflects on conversations surrounding young men, particularly racialized young men, their relationship with literacy, and how these conversations are founded on their failure and deficit language about their literacy repertoires. We believe that such research is closely tied with other social justice themes and modes of inquiry. This article steers away from the ways racialized young men do not use literacy, and focuses instead on the ways that they do use literacy. Their literacy practices are predominantly visual in nature, frequently accompanied by other modes such as words and moving images. Fitting within the scope of the special issue on social justice and visual methods, we argue for a greater acknowledgement and analytical gaze on sensory and affective nuances within visual research. This approach adds texture and volume to interpreting racialized young men's narratives. Interrogating their visuals and talking through their narratives that have agentive qualities gives both researchers an awareness of young men's emotional worlds, and how the visual allows for sense-laden, agentive meaning-making.

ABSTRACTObjectives Administrative data are widely used in research, health policy, and the evaluation of health service delivery. We undertook a qualitative study to explore the barriers to high quality coding of chart information to administrative data, at the level of coders in Canada.
ApproachOur study design is qualitative. We recruited professional medical chart coders and data users working across Alberta, Canada, using a multimodal recruitment strategy. We conducted an in-depth, semi-structured interview with each participant. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. We conducted thematic analysis (e.g., line-by-line open coding) of interview transcripts. Codes were then collated into themes and compared across our dataset to ensure accurate interpretations of the data. The study team met to discuss, modify, and interpret emergent themes in the context of the barriers to coding administrative data.
ResultsWe recruited 28 coding specialists. In general, coders had high job satisfaction and sense of collegiality, as well as sufficient resources to address their coding questions. They believed themselves to be adequately trained and consistently put in the extra effort when searching charts to find additional information that accurately reflected the patient journey. Barriers to high quality coding from the coder perspective included: 1) Incomplete and inaccurate information in physician progress notes and discharge summaries; 2) Difficulty navigating a complex hybrid of paper and electronic medical records; 3) Focus on productivity rather than quality by the employer, which at times resulted in inconsistent instructions for coding secondary diagnoses and discordant expectations between the employer and the coders' professional standards.
ConclusionFuture interventions to improve the quality of administrative data should focus on physician education of necessary components in charting, evaluation of electronic medical records from the perspectives of those who play a key role in abstracting data, and evaluation of productivity guidelines for coders and their effects on data quality.

International audience ; Since 2011, the French State has reinforced its linguistic policy towards migrants by introducing a system of French as language of integration. This training is intended for migrants wishing to obtain a residence permit on French territory. This article presents two sessions of teaching French as a language of integration according to a new approach that uses socio-biographical pedagogic tools. We look at specific sessions to identify language skills that could be used in a French language teaching program. In that way, the teacher must take care of the specificities and contextual realities concerning the post-colonial situation in Guadeloupe. He shall choose multimodal means to help the migrants appropriate their new identity. The analysis of teachers' pedagogical worksheets, learners' productions, traces left on the board and transcriptions of interactions made it possible to highlight the possibility of achieving the objective of linguistic appropriation while using socio-biographical accompaniment. This research investigates the representation of people in museums, focusing on the San, South Africa's first nation. Using a multimodal social semiotic framework, it analyses three exhibitions of the San that were mounted over a period of a hundred years in a natural history museum from 1911 to the present. The research takes into consideration the socio-political background in which the exhibitions were designed, and examines how this manifests in the ways in which the San were represented. The analysis surfaces three dominant discourses, namely evolutionary, ecological as well as a discourse of transformation. These discourses are complex and always in dialogue with one another. The research entailed working with and analysing photographs and drawing on secondary texts of two exhibitions that are no longer open to the public, and analysing an existing exhibition. The data analysis was framed by the semiotic principles of recontextualisation as posited by Bezemer and Kress (2008): selection, social relations and arrangement. Selection refers to the choice of meaning materials for an exhibition. Arrangement refers to the decisions made in the display of the meaning materials (including layout, framing, and foregrounding), and social relations pertain to the social repositioning that takes place in the process of recontextualisation. The research showed how discourses shifted across time, but that dominant discourses such as an evolutionary discourse persisted through the ages and the various exhibitions. By analysing exhibitions of the San against the political backdrop of colonialism, apartheid and post-apartheid this research contributes to an understanding of colonial museums and their exhibitions. It provides suggestions to South African museum practitioners dealing with colonial collections on how to bring a decolonial perspective to exhibitions. The insights gained through this research may enable museum professionals to better understand meaning making and representation in museum display and to contribute to current debates on representation, including ways in which dominant discourses are reflected and refracted in museums. The dialogue between discourses and traces of discourse is of interest within the museum context as well as other contexts of transformation. The research shows that it is possible to map a re-imagining of museum display on the three principles of recontextualisation – selection, arrangement and social relations – in order to see what forms transformation in museum display could take.

The field of translation is undergoing various profound changes. On the one hand it is being thoroughly reshaped by the advent and constant improvement of new technologies. On the other hand, new forms of translation are starting to see the light of day in the wake of social and legal developments that require that products and content that are created, are accessible for everybody. One of these new forms of translation, is audio description (AD), a service that is aimed at making audiovisual content accessible to people with sight loss. New legislation requires that this content is accessible by 2025, which constitutes a tremendous task given the limited number of people that are at present trained as audio describers. A possible solution would be to use machine translation to translate existing audio descriptions into different languages. Since AD is characterized by short sentences and simple, concrete language, it could be a good candidate for machine translation. In the present study, we want to test this hypothesis for the English-Dutch language pair. Three 30 minute AD excerpts of different Dutch movies that were originally audio described in English, were translated into Dutch using DeepL. The translations were analysed using the harmonized DQF-MQM error typology and taking into account the specific multimodal nature of the source text and the intersemiotic dimension of the original audio description process. The analysis showed that the MT output had a relatively high error rate, particularly in the categories of Accuracy - mistranslation and Fluency - grammar. This seems to indicate that extensive post-editing will be needed, before the text can be used in a professional context. ; El camp de la traducció està experimentant canvis profunds. D'una banda, està patint una autèntica transformació gràcies a l'arribada i la millora constant de les noves tecnologies. De l'altra, noves formes de traducció comencen a veure la llum arran de l'evolució social i legal que exigeix que els productes i continguts que es creen siguin accessibles per a tothom. Una d'aquestes noves formes de traducció és l'audiodescripció (AD), un servei que té com a objectiu fer accessibles els continguts audiovisuals a les persones amb pèrdua de visió. La nova legislació exigeix que aquests continguts siguin accessibles abans del 2025, la qual cosa constitueix una tasca immensa atès el nombre limitat de persones que actualment tenen formació com a audiodescriptors. Una possible solució seria utilitzar la traducció automàtica per traduir les audiodescripcions ja existents a diferents idiomes. L'AD, caracteritzada per frases curtes i un llenguatge senzill i concret, podria ser una bona candidata per a la traducció automàtica. En aquest estudi pretenem demostrar la hipòtesi per a la combinació lingüística anglès-holandès. Concretament, fragments de 30 minuts d'AD de tres pel·lícules holandeses que es van audiodescriure originalment en anglès, han estat traduïts a l'holandès per mitjà de l'eina DeepL. Les traduccions s'han analitzat utilitzant la tipologia d'error harmonitzada DQF-MQM i tenint en compte la naturalesa multimodal específica del text font i la dimensió intersemiòtica del procés d'audiodescripció original. L'anàlisi ha mostrat que la producció de TA té una taxa d'error relativament alta, especialment en les categories de precisió -errors de traducció- i fluïdesa gramatical. Això sembla indicar que caldrà una extensa postedició, abans que el text es pugui utilitzar en un context professional. ; El campo de la traducción está experimentando diversos cambios profundos. Por un lado, la llegada de nuevas tecnologías en constante desarrollo la está reconfigurando completamente. Por otro, están empezando a surgir nuevas formas de traducción como resultado de avances sociales y legales que establecen que los productos y contenidos que se crean han de ser accesibles para todo el mundo. Una de estas nuevas formas de traducción es la audiodescripción (AD), un servicio orientado a hacer accesible para las personas con pérdida de visión los contenidos audiovisuales. La nueva legislación establece que estos deberán ser accesibles para 2025, lo que representa una tarea desmesurada, dado el limitado número de personas actualmente cualificadas en AD. Una posible solución pasaría por utilizar la traducción automática para traducir las audiodescripciones existentes a diferentes idiomas. Teniendo en cuenta que la AD se caracteriza por el uso de frases cortas y un lenguaje sencillo y concreto, sería una buena candidata para la traducción automática. El presente estudio ha puesto a prueba esta hipótesis con la combinación lingüística inglés-holandés. Para ello, se utilizó DeepL para traducir al holandés tres fragmentos de 30 minutos de AD extraidos de varias películas holandesas que habían sido audiodescritas en inglés. Para analizar las traducciones se utilizó la tipología de error DQF-MQM armonizada y se tuvo en cuenta la naturaleza multimodal específica del texto de origen y la dimensión intersemiótica del proceso original de audiodescripción. El análisis mostró que el resultado de la TA presentaba una tasa de error relativamente elevada, especialmente en las categorías de Exactitud/Error de traducción y Fluidez/Gramática. Esto parece indicar que, antes de que el texto pueda ser utilizado en un contexto profesional, será necesario un proceso de posedición exhaustive.

Цель настоящего исследования заключается в поиске механизма реализации крупномасштабных инвестиционных проектов, имеющих важное народнохозяйственное значение, в современных экономических условиях, для которых характерна санкционная политика зарубежных государств, ограничение государственного бюджетного инвестирования и массовый отток иностранных инвесторов. В качестве примера крупномасштабного инвестиционного проекта рассмотрено строительство морского торгового порта Усть-Луга как многофункционального мультимодального комплекса. Это один из самых значимых проектов развития морской портовой инфраструктуры, реализуемый в последние годы. Дана оценка значимости реализации этого проекта для развития Балтийского региона, проведен конкурентный анализ положения морского торгового порта в сравнении с крупнейшими портами европейских стран. Определены возможности развития морского торгового порта Усть-Луга, основными из которых можно назвать благоприятные природно-климатические условия, удачное географическое положение, высокая заинтересованность в строительстве современного морского порта со стороны государства и региональных властей. Рассмотрены ограничения в реализации проекта строительства морского порта Усть-Луга, а именно неблагоприятная геополитическая ситуация, растущая конкуренция со стороны других морских портов, дефицит инвестиционных средств и якорных инвесторов.На основе анализа возможных ограничений реализации проекта сделан вывод о наличии существенных рисков, основным из которых является дефицит инвестиционных ресурсов. В этих условиях для осуществления крупномасштабного инвестиционного проекта предлагается сделать упор на совершенствование государственно-частного партнерства. Это позволит, по мнению авторов, реализовать подобного рода проект в намеченные сроки. ; The aim of this study is to search for a mechanism for implementing large investment projects of crucial economic importance in the modern economic conditions characterized by the sanction policy of foreign states, limited public investment, and a mass exodus of foreign investors.An example of a large-scale investment project is the construction of a multipurpose multimodal complex the commercial seaport of Ust-Luga. This is one of the most recent large projects in seaport infrastructure development.This article estimates the project's significance for the development of the Baltic region and presents a competitive analysis of the seaport position in comparison to the largest European ports.The authors analyze the strengths of the seaport construction project, namely, the favorable natural environment and climate, advantageous geographical position, strong political will demonstrated by the federal and regional authorities. The article also considers the challenges the project faces unfortunate geopolitical situation, growing competition from other seaports, and lack of investment.Based on the analysis of challenges, it is concluded that there are significant risks associated predominantly with lack of investment.In these conditions, a large investment project requires the enhancement of public-private partnership, which will ensure the timely implementation of such projects.

During the seventies and eighties, the Low Countries offered asylum to persecuted Latin Americans from countries with military regimes. The exile created a space for interaction between the citizens from the Low Countries and the Latin Americans, in which not only the exiles integrated in the new society, but where also the locals integrated in the exiled community through solidarity activities. One such activity was the exposition of solidarity art, among others Chilean arpilleras (see picture below). Our contribution firstly presents the network that made the smuggling of arpilleras from Chile to the Low Countries possible and secondly analyses the content of this artifact that represents the Chilean reality of that time. The arpilleras made during the Chilean military dictatorship (1973-1990) are a type of tapestry – forbidden at the time - that denounced the social situation, sometimes by using a mixture of images and text. They were made by unemployed women and relatives of executed or "disappeared" citizens. They were smuggled to many countries, among others to Belgium and the Netherlands, to raise international awareness about living conditions and repression (Adams, 2013). The main themes depicted on the arpilleras were poverty and repression. The corpus we analyzed comes from Chilean exiles who worked together with the Vicaría de la Solidaridad and consists of 60 photos of arpilleras that were smuggled to the Netherlands. The analysis is based on the concepts of viewpoint and meaning construction in multimodal messages, in this case messages composed by the integration of language, images and symbols (Dancygier & Vandelanotte, 2017).The methodology consists of (i) grouping the arpilleras that represent a similar scene, (ii) categorizing the types of utterances included (e.g. names of institutions, toponyms or represented speech) and (iii) analyzing the specific representation of poverty or repression. The results reveal that this kind of solidarity art visualizes Human Rights violations presenting information that is mitigated in official documents (cf. De Cock & Michaud Maturana, 2014 and 2017), and that these arpilleras describe poverty and repression through temporal and causal relations by establishing relations between themes such as education, healthcare, torture and forced disappearance or assassinations.
