The propensity of factories in the footwear industry of the East Midlands to survive as active units of production over the period 1957 to 1979 is shown to be associated with at least some of the attributes of size, location, type, and age of the premises occupied. A number of possible causes of establishment or 'case' loss are suggested but the analysis is hampered by the problem of unravelling a complex web of interrelationships between the attributes used. In the second part of the paper an attempt is made to simplify the complex web using methods from numerical taxonomy. The strategy adopted is to use an objective classification method to define types of factories on the basis of shared common attributes and then to determine which of the resulting types have suffered the greatest losses. It is shown that relative employment loss has been greatest in old multistorey premises of medium size, particularly when located in the inner city. It is also argued that the premises most unsuitable for the accommodation of modern technological developments in production have been most at risk.

SUMMARYThis study uses the entry‐level wage of Taiwanese female college graduates to ensure a clear causality between the wage and physical appearance. It is found that height raises the entry wage, and that there exists an optimal BMI. Graduates who are satisfied with their looks earn 3.4% more than the average. The wage premiums for a good college grade and for all advantageous physical characteristics are significantly lower than that for admission to a selective college. Graduates who are satisfied with their looks are more likely to become full‐time workers and are less likely to be unemployed shortly after graduation.

Die Stadtbewohner haben einen großen Einfluss auf ihre Umwelt, sei es die unmittelbare Umgebung ihrer Wohnsiedlung oder ihre Stadt insgesamt. Bei der Gestaltung der Umgebung der Wohnsiedlung sind soziale, ökonomische sowie kulturelle Aspekte zu beachten. Sie beeinflussen den physischen Aspekt der Wohnsiedlung und weiterhin die Formung einer Stadt. Da Menschen ihre Umwelt, die einen Teil der Stadt darstellt, häufig verändern, müssen die Änderungen gründlich beachtet und analysiert werden, um die Stadtplanung zu verbessern. Als Untersuchungsobjekt der Arbeit werden die Wohnsiedlungen ('desa' / Dorf) in der Stadt Denpasar auf Bali, Indonesien gewählt, wobei Denpasar einen besonderen traditionellen Charakter hat. Die Städte auf Bali werden von 'desa' abgeleitet, so dass die 'desa' eine wesentliche Rolle für die künftige Entwicklung von Denpasar spielen. Aufgrund der relativ rapiden Stadtentwicklung orientieren sich offizielle Bauvorschriften, die von Stadtverwaltungen gesetzt werden, in der Regel an baulichen Gegebenheiten und werden ohne Rücksicht auf soziale, kulturelle und ökonomische Bedingungen der städtischen 'desa' in der Stadtplanung durchgeführt. Auf der anderen Seite stellt eine 'desa' wegen ihrer Kultur und Tradition ein relativ 'stabiles' Element der Stadt dar. Außerdem werden oft 'desa' wegen ihrer Eigenschaften, die 'statischer' als die Stadt sind, als 'Hindernis' des Stadtwachstums gesehen, da die städtischen 'desa' relativ langsam wachsen und nicht sofort den Stadtveränderungen folgen. Das große Problem ist, dass die Stadtplaner und die Stadtverwaltung, mit dem besonderen Ziel zur Entwicklung der Stadt Denpasar, ungünstige Änderungen und unerwünschte Umwandlungen der Stadtflächen ausführen könnten. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt in der Beurteilung, in welchem Umfang die existierenden 'desa' in Zukunft noch erhalten werden können und in den Vorschlägen der verbesserten 'desa-Entwicklung' und der Stadtplanung Denpasars. ; The inhabitants of a city have a great influence on its environment, either on direct surrounding of their housing or on the city as a whole. In the development process of housing environments, the social, economic, and cultural aspects should be considered. These unphysical aspects influence the physical aspect of the housing and furthermore also the city development. Since people always change their environment which represents a part of the city, this change should be carefully analysed in order to improve the city planning. In this work, the housing settlement ('desa' or village) of Denpasar in Bali, Indonesia is chosen as an investigation object, because Denpasar has a unique traditional character. Basically, the cities in Bali are derived from 'desa', so 'desa' plays an important role for the future development of Denpasar. Due to the relative rapid urban development, the official construction specifications, which are normally authorised by city government, are made according to the structural/physical conditions of the city. These specifications are applied in the city planning without considering social, cultural and economic conditions of the urban 'desa'. However, a 'desa' with its culture and tradition represents a relative 'stable' element of the city, and so, often 'desa' is seen as an 'obstacle' of the city growth. 'Desa' is supposed to be more 'static' than city, because the urban 'desa' grows slowly and can not immediately follow city changes. Unfavourable changes and unwanted transformations of the land use, which are caused by city planners and city government who want to develop Denpasar, can be a great problem for the city. The main emphasis of the work lies in the assessment of how far the existing 'desa' still can be maintained in the future, and also in the suggestions of the optimal development of 'desa' and Denpasar city planning.

This study develops and tests the hypothesis that physically attractive politicians receive more news coverage. The physical attractiveness of Members of the 16th Israeli Knesset (MKs) was assessed by students abroad, who did not know they were evaluating Israeli politicians. The number of times each member appeared on national television news at the time of study was obtained and used as a measure of television news coverage. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that, over and above controls for a host of factors, the physical attractiveness of the MKs was associated with their coverage in television news.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most widely consumed legumes in the world, but nevertheless different varieties vary with respect to their physical and chemical aspects. This study evaluated the physical and chemical characteristics (color, hardness after cooking, water absorption capacity, cooking time, integrity of the beans after cooking, proximate composition and mineral composition) of the following varieties of the common bean: Carioca, IAPAR 81, Saracura, Juriti, Pérola, Colibri and IAPAR 31, all destined for both the internal Brazilian and external markets. The varieties studied had different proximate compositions and contents of the following minerals: K, Ca, N, Mg, S, Cu, Fe and Mn; but identical contents of P, Zn and B. The beans were classified as small in size. The Carioca variety showed the lowest values for L* (41.29) and H* (57.22), and the highest values for a* (12.17), its beans being redder and darker than the others. The Saracura variety showed the lowest degree of hydration (95.70 g/100g), cooking time (22.67 min.) and whole beans after cooking (30%), while the Pérola variety showed the highest values for these same parameters, 106.77 g/100g, 43.67 min. and 82.16%, respectively. No correlation was observed between the calcium and magnesium contents of the beans and the hardness of the raw bean, degree of hydration during maceration, cooking time and integrity of the cooked beans. According to the characteristics studied, the Saracura variety is a good option for both industrial and domestic use.

Around 1.3 billion tons of food are thrown away every year in the world, and it is estimated that 60 kg/per capita are wasted in Brazil. As a result, the UN's 2030 schedule includes among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), number 12, which deals with responsible consumption and production, involving the social, environmental, economic and institutional dimensions. By using food in its entirety and/or its fractions (peels, seeds, stalks and leaves), there is a reduction in waste, environmental impacts and food production costs. Pumpkin seeds are nutritionally rich and can be used in many different applications, including as flour. Pumpkin Seed Flour (PSF), produced from Cucurbita maxima L., was evaluated for yield, physical, physicochemical and chemical characteristics. The flour yield was 93.9%, the water absorption index confirmed the low presence of starch and the solubility index confirmed the presence of soluble solids. In composition, it presented a high percentage of fibers, lipids and proteins, characteristic of oilseeds and legumes. FSA does not contain gluten and can nutritionally enhance foods for celiac patients.
