This paper examines Pierre Rosanvallon's contribution to understanding populism by adopting two approaches: the first one is the internalist approach, comprising an analysis of his book Le Siècle du populisme (2020) and its comparison with his theory of changes in contemporary democracy (2006-2015). The second approach consists of comparing Le Siècle du populisme with the works of other authors on the subject. The paper is divided into three parts. First, we analyze Le Siècle du populisme, focusing on the two aspects that we consider the most original: the typology of "limit forms of democracy" and its ways of degradation and his critique of populism. In the second part, we contrast this work with his theory of changes in contemporary democracy. In the third part, we contextualize Rosanvallon's work within the literature on populism, exploring the author's idea of populism vis-à-vis democracy. We also compare his interpretation with three of the main contemporary works on the subject: that of Nadia Urbinati involving theory of democracy, and that of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe, leading theorists of "leftist populism", targets of Rosanvallon's criticism. Then, we argue that what distinguishes his contribution to populism research is the scope of his theory, able to encompass tensions and complexities in the study of democracy and that offers a way out of the theoretical ambiguities of previous studies on populism. ; L'objectif de cet article est d'examiner la contribution de Pierre Rosanvallon à la compréhension du populisme. After President Trump's election, BREXIT and the widespread rise of far-Right political parties, much public discussion has intensely focused on populism and authoritarianism. In the middle of the twentieth century, members of the early Frankfurt School prolifically studied and theorized fascism and anti-Semitism in Germany and the United States. In this volume, leading European and American scholars apply insights from the early Frankfurt School to present-day authoritarian populism, including the Trump phenomenon and related developments across the globe. Chapters are arranged into three sections exploring different aspects of the topic: theories, historical foundations, and manifestations via social media. Contributions examine the vital political, psychological and anthropological theories of early Frankfurt School thinkers, and how their insights could be applied now amidst the insecurities and confusions of twenty-first century life. The many theorists considered include Adorno, Fromm, Löwenthal and Marcuse, alongside analysis of Austrian Facebook pages and Trump's tweets and operatic media drama. This book is a major contribution towards deeper understanding of populism's resurgence in the age of digital capitalism.

Populism is a powerful force today, but its full scope has eluded the analytical tools of both orthodox and heterodox 'populism studies'. This book provides a valuable alternative perspective. It reconstructs in detail for the first time the sociological analyses of US demagogues by members of the Frankfurt School and compares these with contemporary approaches. Modern demagogy emerges as a key under-researched feature of populism, since populist movements, whether 'left' or 'right', are highly susceptible to 'demagogic capture'. The book also details the culture industry's populist contradictions - including its role as an incubator of modern demagogues - from the 1930s through to today's social media and 'Trumpian psychotechnics'. The topic of sustainable development is investigated through Theodor W. Adorno's theory of artificial negativity, which states that modern government is achieved by means of internal oppositions. Elite debate on this view concerning sustainable development is described as the production of the appearance of opposition between two sides, those who believe in sustainable development through local management, & those who believe in unfettered growth, which ends in perpetuating the bureaucratic class as a whole. The real opposition in this debate is termed organic negativity, or the notion that local management will always end in unconstrained growth. It is argued that, within organic negativity, a kind of populism is possible in which ordinary individuals are capable of managing their spaces without the need for outside intervention of a bureaucratic class. From this populist position, sustainable development is considered a version of resource managerialism requiring expert domination of local resources. D. M. Smith

The electoral success of challenges to principles of liberal tolerance in recent years surely calls out for a thorough rethinking of how our democracies work. This collection of essays is a welcome reminder that political theory can be an important part of that rethinking. Jeremiah Morelock has assembled a set of discussions here that makes a valuable contribution to our efforts to understand where the political world is headed. Its 10 essays, some written by well known scholars such as Douglas Kellner, Stephen Eric Bronner, and Christian Fuchs combine insights from the work of the Frankfurt School with explanations of concrete political developments in the contemporary era, and provide an important foundation for further explanatory work.

While the established histories of architectural theory generally focus upon the discourse produced by eminent architects and/or famous scholars, there is another counter-discourse that has developed gradually in the background. This is a discourse against architectural theory, in an effort to undermine theory's importance, even to eliminate its value, scope and use altogether. Yet this implicit anti-theory – which has slowly but steadily become embedded in the international architectural scene over the last decades – is usually ignored or underestimated by architectural historians.Drawing upon the recent literature on populism (e.g. Arditi, Moffitt, Taggart, Laclau), and also taking into consideration the few, but valuable, recent texts about populism within architecture (e.g. Fausch, Fowler, Shamiyeh, Lootsma), I will argue that a populist trend against theoretical inquiry is nowadays dispersed horizontally, thereby legitimizing particular, even if diverging, research methods and design practices. The fight against intellectualism and the elites, the promoting of a new sense of architectural 'morality', the use of simplistic procedures, forms and slogans, are among the many symptoms of a populist mentality that traverses ideological boundaries, social contexts and conflicting political identities, linking dreams of radical communal utopias to fantasies of limitless post-capitalist markets.This essay discusses in particular the ways in which such a counter-theoretical discourse has re-emerged in the last decades among architects in Greece. By examining the publications about twentieth-century Greek architects (notably Dimitris Pikionis and Aris Konstantinidis), as well as looking at the informal talks and interviews being spread today through the internet (such as greekarchitects.gr on the Vimeo channel), I will comment on how, in the case of Greece, a long established populist architectural rhetoric was, and still is, disguised behind various anti-theoretical façades.
