STALIN'S FEARS OF A SEPARATE PEACE, 1942
In: Intelligence and national security, Issue 4, p. 97-99
ISSN: 0268-4527
STALIN DREW THE DIRE CONCLUSION THAT CHURCHILL WAS LOOKING FOR A SEPARATE PEACE WITH GERMANY. THE BRITISH HAD NO IDEA OF THE TRUE EXTENT OF THE DARK SUSPICIONS OF STALIN. HAD IT KNOWN, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN BETTER PREPARED FOR THE KIND OF POLICIES STALIN WAS TO ADOPT AT THE END OF HOSITILITES, FOR IT WOULD THEN NEVER HAVE ASSUMED THAT A MAN WHO BELIEVED CHURCHILL WOULD CONCLUDE A SEPARATE PEACE IN 1942 COULD EVER BELIVE IN THE PROSPECTS FOR COLLECTIVE SECURITY IN THE POST-WAR WORLD. STALIN'S FEAR OF BRITISH TREACHERY IN 1942 CALLS INTO QUESTION HIS INTERPRETATION OF INTELLIGENCE ASSESSMENTS OR THE QUALITY OF THOSE ASSESSMENTS--OR BOTH.
