The ideology of media: measuring the political leaning of Spanish news media through Twitter users' interactions
The news media have a strong influence on people's perception of reality. But despite claims to objectivity, media organizations are, in general, politically biased (Patterson & Donsbach, 1996; Gaebler, 2017). The link between news media outlets and political organizations has been a critical question in political science and communication studies. To assess the closeness between the news media and particular political organizations, scholars have used different methods such as content analysis, undertaking surveys or adopting a political economy view. With the advent of social networks, new sources of data are now available to measure the relationship between media organizations and parties. Assuming that users coherently retweet political and news information (Wong, Tan, Sen & Chiang, 2016), and drawing on the retweet overlap network (RON) method (Guerrero-Solé, 2017), this research uses people's perceived ideology of Spanish political parties (CIS, 2020) to propose a measure of the ideology of news media in Spain. Results show that scores align with the result of previous research on the ideology of the news media (Ceia, 2020). We also find that media outlets are, in general, politically polarized with two groups or clusters of news media being close to the left-wing parties UP and PSOE, and the other to the right-wing and far-right parties Cs, PP, and Vox. This research also underlines the media's ideological stability over time. ; This research was funded by the MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE under Grant PGC2018-097352-A-I00.

The use of hashtags as a political branding strategy / El uso de los hashtags como una estrategia de marca política
In: Revista Internacional de Relaciones Públicas, Band 9, Heft 17, S. 05-24
ISSN: 2174-3681
Abstract Political brands are using Twitter intensively during campaigns. The objective of this study is twofold: to build a theoretical framework to pose that the use of hashtags can be a brand strategy; and to analyze how political brands are effectively using hashtags. First, drawing on the social identity approach, this article argues that brands are becoming social identities enacted through horizontal user-to-user relationships. Second, a sample of a million tweets from the last two Spanish elections in 2015 and 2016 is collected to analyze the type of hashtags posted by politicians and the networks of interaction. Results show that political brands mainly used three types of hashtags: party, candidate and branded hashtags; and mainly interacted with their own hashtags. This can be considered as a traditional brand identity strategy. However, a brand community strategy would be more aligned with the horizontal and top-down nature of social networking sites as well as with today's all-encompassing political debate. Political brands should foster a co-creative brand identity process to build more effectively the organization's meaningful values. Keywords: political brands, hashtags, brand community, social identity, Spanish elections Resumen Las marcas políticas están usando Twitter intensivamente durante las campañas.
Estructura de los tweets políticos durante las campañas electorales de 2015 y 2016 en España ; Structure of the political tweets during the electoral campaigns of 2015 and 2016 in Spain
; Twitter has become one of the main media for spreading political messages. The objective of this work is to analyze how users of political conversations gave structure to their tweets, and what the impact this structure has in the spread or retweet of these messages. We analyze two samples of more than half a million tweets each, related to the Spanish general elections in 2015 and 2016. The results show significant differences in the order and amount of elements in the tweets used by politicians, media, journalists, and citizens. In particular, politicians tend to make a greater use of hashtags, and media use more links. The spread of tweets depends upon the presence of these links, the number of followers, and the number of hashtags. This work contributes with knowledge of the strategies applied by politicians, media, and journalists in the elaboration of electoral campaign tweets.

Government formation and political discussions in Twitter: an extended model for quantifying political distances in multiparty democracies
The retweet overlap network (RON) method has proved to be successful in quantifying the distances between political parties in multiparty democracies. These distances are frequently used in political science to explain the formation of coalitions and governments. This article explores how data collected from Twitter can be related to ideological similarities between political parties, drawing on an extended development of the RON method that calculates the overlaps between the communities of retweeters of the most influential users in a political discussion. The method is applied to two conversations in Twitter during the last two General Elections in Spain in 2015 and 2016. Our results are consistent with the dynamics and the outcomes of the bargaining processes after both elections and support the Spanish President's statement on the reasonableness of a government of the Popular Party, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, and the Citizens–Party of the Citizenry after the Spanish General Elections in 2016. This work links quantitative analysis of the overlaps of the parties' communities of retweeters with the theories of coalition and government formation. It contributes to the exploration of Twitter metrics that can be used as new indicators of the support for coalitions in multiparty democracies.

The impact of the far-right on Twitter during the 2019 Spanish elections
; The two 2019 Spanish elections, held on April 28 (28A) and on November 10 (10N), were marked by the irruption of the far-right populist party Vox, which went from 23 to 52 deputies. The aim of this research is to analyze the impact of its emergence in the structure of the communities (Smith et al., 2014) of political debate networks on Twitter during these two elections. The study also compares the structures of the two 2019 elections with those of 2015 and 2016, as well as the political distances between the main Spanish parties. The analyzed sample is made up of more than 1.5 million tweets published during the electoral campaigns of 28A and 10N. Although previous research shows that, in general, interaction patterns and networks structures tend to remain stable after the repetition of an election this research shows a substantial change in the structure of RON communities (Guerrero-Solé, 2017) and in the distances between parties. Specifically, the research shows an increase in the distance between the two main Spanish political blocs –the one formed by the triple right wing (PP, Cs and Vox) and the one constitudes by left and nationalist parties– and (2) the location of Vox in the center of the right-wing cluster.

In: Methaodos: revista de ciencias sociales, Band 11, Heft 1, S. m231101a10
ISSN: 2340-8413
Audience Contradictions in the Negotiation of Controversial Cultural Media Content
In: Intercultural communication, Band 18, Heft 2, S. 1-08
ISSN: 1404-1634
This paper analyses how people negotiate representations of other cultures in the media, in particular those traits that can be considered controversial in the sense of generating strong opinions and opposing stances. A news story about an Egyptian television channel run by Egyptian women journalists wearing the niqab (Maria TV) was used to stimulate debate in four focus groups. Although most of the participants initially criticized the approach adopted by the television channel, they also expressed opinions on journalists in niqab that agreed with the representation proposed by the channel. The article shows that even though audiences may seem capable of criticizing media biases, they do not recognize their own internalized prejudices and, ultimately, accept the discourse proposed by media.

Celebrities use social networks to interact with and to mobilize their audiences (Zilinsky, Vaccari, Nagler & Tucker, 2019). Politicized celebrities may assume the role of leaders to counter politicians' monopoly of political representation and to bring social awareness to specific causes (Street, 2004; Wheeler, 2013). This paper analyzes the impact of politicized celebrities in Twitter among politicized and non-politicized audiences. We focus on the case of the Catalan singer Rosalia, who published a short explicit tweet against the Spanish far-right populist party Vox with the text 'Fuck vox' the day after the Spanish general elections in November 2019. We measure the political preferences and activity of Rosalia's followers, Fuck vox post's retweeters, and users who retweeted the singer before and after the tweet. The results show that Rosalia had a great impact among left-wing and Catalan separatist parties, and among those users with no political preferences or political activity. In addition, we found that Rosalia's followers were less likely to be politically active (Loader, Vromen & Xenos, 2016). This study sheds light on the potential of politicized celebrities to mobilize their non-politicized audiences to counter far-right movements in social networks.
In: Revista latina de comunicación social: RLCS, Heft 68, S. 167-188
ISSN: 1138-5820
This work analyses the political news of eight Spanish television channels in order to see what image is built of politics, and particularly how the news of corruption affects the image of politics in Spanish news broadcasts. Different cases of corruption such as Gürtel, Palma Arena and those associated with judge Baltasar Garzón in his final stage in office, occupy part of the study. A new methodology is therefore proposed that enables the quality of the political information emitted from inside and outside the political content of the news programmes to be observed. Particular attention is paid to the news broadcasts of Televisión Española and Cuatro as those which offer a more balanced view of politics, and channels such as La Sexta, which give priority to a narrative construction of politics in the news programmes around causes of corruption.
