Abstract
The metropolitan county fire services were, in organizational terms, perhaps the least affected by abolition of any of the former county council departments. An early decision was made by central government to retain the fire service at county level, at least initially, and the staff and organizations of the 6 metropolitan brigades were transferred to the new fire and civil defence authorities largely intact. Briefly covers the years before 1974 prior to moving on to discussion of the nature and development of the post abolition arrangements. (JLN)
